About the role

As a volunteer, you’ll work alongside professional mechanics, helping them refurbish a wide range of donated bikes. Your role will involve:

  • Refurbishing bikes ready for sale
  • Stripping bikes for spares and/or scrap
  • Supporting staff to sell bikes to members of the public
  • Help us with our eBay account
  • Generally mucking in to make the project work

We also have opportunities for volunteers to work alongside people on release from prison to support them with fixing bikes.

This is a great opportunity for those who enjoy working with people from all walks of life and want to use their bike know-how to help make a real difference in their community.

’"Life Cycle helped me massively in prison, keeping me occupied and out of the cell… I contacted Life Cycle when I was released because I wanted to give back something to the people that helped me. I felt respected and treated as a valued member of society, not just an ex-con." – Jon (name changed)

About our Hub

By volunteering at our Hub, you'll play a key part in Bikes Beyond Bars, our award-winning bike recycling project. We collect donations of unwanted bicycles from the public and take them to the prisons across the UK, where our Workshop Instructors teach men how to strip down, clean and refit them, giving them a new lease of life.

Bikes leave the prison workshop and are taken to our community Hub in Bristol. There, Life Cycle’s mechanics and our team of volunteers check, tweak, and prepare them for sale. Anyone can buy a bike from Life Cycle; however, many of our bikes go to local people on low incomes, enabling them to get a bike and start cycling. Funds raised from bike sales are put directly back into the project.

About you

We’re looking for someone practical, positive, and ready to get stuck in:

  • Good mechanical skills – if you’re unsure, get in touch!
  • Open, non-judgemental attitude.
  • Believe in the possibility of change for those who have been involved in the criminal justice system.
  • A practical, can-do attitude.
  • Enthusiastic about Life Cycle’s charitable mission, vision and values.
